Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances… (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)
Have you gone through something that seems impossible to be grateful for? Are you in the middle of it now?
“There’s no way this is of God! I can’t be grateful for this. This is their fault. This is the devil. This has evil written all over it.”
How big is your God?
Does your God bring good from bad?
Does your God forgiven even your worst mistakes?
Does your God redeem the broken, heal the afflicted, give hope to the desperate, shine light through the darkness?
Does your God do the miracle you least expect–perhaps the miracle you were NOT praying for, but a miracle nonetheless.
If so, we can be thankful in all the circumstances, without applying our human judgment (good/bad, right/wrong). We can celebrate that this is the day that God has given us… to be alive… to live and move and have our being… to breathe and receive life… to go through fire and become more of ourselves… to surrender to a larger story–a story that sometimes offends our sensibilities.
We can be thankful in ALL circumstances. Not sometimes thankful, but ONLY thankful.
Because God is good. This is life… And it is well with our souls.
