“Relax and release, letting the negative feeling move through you.” —Michael Singer
Singer’s book, “The Untethered Soul” is excellent, if you haven’t read it. But for today, just consider this…
Think of a recent negative feeling you’ve had. Anger, sadness, bitterness, fear, resentment, frustration…
Most of us do one of two things:
1. We ignore or stuff the feelings.
2. We think we’re honoring the feeling by claiming it, identifying with it, staying in it, and feeding it.
Both are less helpful than Singer’s advice above:
Relax… feel your feeling… and let it move through you. Yes, the feeling is telling you something, like a light on a dashboard. But you are not your feelings, and they don’t run your life.
I’m still learning (at a novice level) to let LOVE, JOY, PEACE be my normal mode of operation. Instead of being bounced around by the circumstances of life, I’m realizing more and more that the good life is like a spring of living water within me, but I’ve got crap blocking the flow! Stuff like:
Judgment. Shame. Disappointment. Sadness. Fear.
But it’s all in my head. I’m doing it to myself. It’s like self-inflicted torture.
Instead, when we relax and release, we can surrender to whatever God is doing/allowing in this moment and enjoy the journey. We can learn to be content—whatever the circumstances. Joyful, despite the struggle. Loving, even in the face of rejection. Peaceful, in the middle of the storm.
I’m not there yet, but I get glimpses… and they’re lasting a little longer.
Let’s relax and release today. Let go and see what happens…
